You’ve never seen Loreen like this before.
But the artist’s ego got a little thorny when she was asked about the role as John-John’s mother in “Vinterviken”.
– Me, a mother? I’m an artist! Kind of like that. I felt, what are they thinking now? Are they aprons and stuff? she says and laughs.

She loved “Vinterviken” as a teenager. The first film adaptation had its cinema premiere in January 1996 when Loreen, now 37, was still 12 years old.

– I am a hopeless romantic, I was completely sold on “Vinterviken”. I have always liked these love beyond borders stories, where it is unpredictable that two people could be with each other at all and love overcomes everything, she says.

What did you think about them making a new version of “Vinterviken” then?

– It was mostly like: “It’s best that you do something good out of this, otherwise you go on a beating”, hahaha. But at the same time, I felt that it is nice to have such a love story. We need it today.

“Vinterviken” is originally a youth novel by Mats Wahl where the immigrant boy John-John from the suburbs falls in love with Elisabeth who lives in the exclusive residential area.

I said “never in life”

Now Loreen plays the role of mother to John-John, played by Mustapha Aarab. She was headhunted for the role because director Alexis Almström needed someone who could play a young mother who could speak Moroccan. But Loreen’s first reaction was to say no.

– I said “never in life”, no, I’m kidding, or yes, I did. I was more like “Send script and we’ll see”. You have such a big ego. Me? A mother? she says and laughs.

Was it then?

– Me, a mother? I’m an artist! Kind of like that. I felt, what are they thinking now? she says.

– Then I didn’t know that it was a young mother, you don’t want to play mother as well. Is there an apron on? Hahaha. So I met Alexis and got to see some of what they had filmed and understood the visual expression. Then I understood what they were looking for and then there was room to be able to adjust as well.

Never a comedy

She has no plans to give up music, but opens up to take on more acting roles.

– Yes, I would actually like that. In this case, it is a very small role, but if you can take things for granted, she says.

– I would have liked to play strong … You will never see me in a comedy that thing is done, I can say that at once.

Oh really?

– Hahaha, I can not be funny to order. Comedians are so intelligent and have such timing. But if it is a role that is in line with my values, I would definitely have said yes, it’s fun.

“Vinterviken” premieres on Netflix on Wednesday 8 September.
